It is widely distributed in the European part, Central Asia, and Western Siberia. Prefers sparse woodlands, meadows, and river banks. It grows near walls, in garbage places and in gardens.

It is a perennial plant of the Rosaceae family with a height of up to 80 cm. The stem is powerful, erect, branched in the upper part and covered with hairs. The basal leaves form a rosette. The upper leaves are simple, the rest are triple. Blooms from May to June.

The flowers are light yellow, single, large, up to 1.5 cm in diameter, with five petals, located on the tops of the stems. The fruit is combined, and consists of numerous single-seeded nuts.

An equally widespread species are harvested and used, which has reddish-brown drooping flowers. The medicinal raw material is a root with a rhizome, less often the aboveground part. The grass is harvested in May – June, and dried in the shade.

Rhizomes with roots are dug out in late autumn, well ventilated and quickly dried in a dryer at a temperature no higher than 45 ° C, so that the raw material does not lose the flavor of cloves. The plant contains a lot of tannins, clove oil, vitamin C, bitter substances, carotene and resins.

Preparations of Wood Avens has an expectorant, anti-inflammatory, astringent, soothing, anti-acid, and hemostatic effect. It is used internally for liver and kidney diseases, inflammation of the upper respiratory tract and cough with difficult-to-separate sputum.
