It grows on the marshy banks of rivers, lakes, ponds, wetlands, damp meadows and groves, often as a weed plant. It is widespread in the European part, except for the Far North, throughout Western and Eastern Siberia, in the Far East. It grows abundantly in the forest zone.

It is an annual herbaceous plant of the buckwheat family with an erect, usually reddish-branched stem up to 30-60 cm high. The leaves are alternate, oblong-ovate, pointed, with a narrow wedge-shaped base, 3-8 cm long, the lower ones are short-stemmed, the upper ones are almost sessile, short-celled and slightly wavy along the edge, fresh leaves have a burning taste.

Other types of mountaineers, close to water pepper, do not have this pungent taste. A peppery taste is one of the most characteristic features of water pepper. The flowers sitting on the ends of the shoots are 1-3 inches in the axils of the sockets, forming sparse long thin strips.

The perianth is greenish or pink, densely dotted with golden-yellow dotted glands on the outside. The fruits are ovoid nuts, slightly shorter than the perianth. Blooms and bears fruit from July to October.

The medicinal raw material is the aboveground part of the plant, it is harvested during flowering, cutting the stems with knives or sickles at a height of 10-20 cm from the soil surface. The collected raw materials are quickly dried outdoors or under a canopy, spread out in a thin layer, turning it over often.

When drying slowly, the grass turns black. It is better to dry in dryers at a temperature of 40-50 ° C. Stored for 2 years. The herb of water pepper contains flavonic glycoside, rutin, glycoside polyhopiperine, which determines the effect on the uterus, vitamins K, E, C, tannins, essential oils and organic acids, salts of manganese, magnesium, and titanium.

Preparations of water pepper have anti-inflammatory, analgesic, irritating, and hemostatic properties, and are able to reduce the permeability of blood vessels.

Applied inside with uterine bleeding, during copious and painful menstruation, bleeding from the bladder, gastric and hemorrhoidal bleeding, diarrhea, enterocolitis, colitis, hemorrhoids, hemoptysis, dropsy, kidney stones and bladder.
