Melilotus Officinalis, Sweet Yellow Clover, Yellow Melilot, Ribbed Melilot, Common Melilot, Kings Clover
It is widespread everywhere and often forms solid thickets in meadows, along roads, and on vacant lots.
It is a biennial herbaceous plant of the legume family with a height of 50-100 cm. The stem is more often single, branched, and pubescent in the upper part. The leaves are alternate, petiolate, trifoliate, bluish-green above, paler below, finely toothed- pilate. Stipules are awl-shaped.
The root is a taproot, branched. Blooms from June – October, which is almost all summer. The flowers are drooping, yellow, on long peduncles, collected in axillary brushes. The fruit is an ovoid bean with an awl-shaped spout. Ripens in August.
The medicinal raw material is the aboveground part of the plant. The tops of the grass are harvested at the beginning of flowering. Dried in good weather in the shade, under a canopy or in the attic, tied in bundles and or laid out in a thin layer.
The dry raw materials are threshed, the flowers and crushed leaves are selected, and the thick stems are thrown away. Stored in a tightly closed container for 2 years.
Coumaric and melilotic acids, melilotin, dicumarol, coumarin, melilotoside, purine derivatives, fat-like substances, protein and essential oil were found in the grass.
Preparations of sweet clover have anticonvulsant, analgesic, mild, expectorant, soothing, wound-healing, irritating and distracting properties, increasing the number of leukocytes in the blood of patients with radiation sickness. In large doses, the plant is poisonous.
It is used internally for angina pectoris, blockage of coronary vessels, hypertension, atherosclerosis, diseases of the upper respiratory tract, pain in the bladder and kidneys, flatulence, migraine, neurasthenia, insomnia, epilepsy, menopause, purulent inflammation of the middle ear, headache, ovarian inflammation, rheumatism, chronic thrombophlebitis and liver diseases, externally with boils, purulent wounds and inflammed mammary glands.
