Calluna Vulgaris, Common Heather, Ling, Heather, Lavender Flowering HeatherIt is distributed in the European part, Western and Eastern Siberia. It grows mainly in pine forests, dry and wetter, on moss and peat bogs, and often forms thickets. It is a good honey plant and can be used as a food plant for tea brewing.
It is an evergreen strong needle – shaped shrub of the heather family 40-80 cm high. The leaves are small, opposite, and whole. Blooms profusely from June to late autumn. The flowers are small, pink, sometimes white, on short pedicels, collected in a lopsided brush.
The fruit is a leathery box. The seeds are small and ripen in August. Medicinal raw materials are leaves and flowers. Collect them during flowering, tearing off the tops of shoots with flowers. The raw materials are dried in the shade or under a canopy, laid out on paper or burlap in a thin layer and often turned over.
Stored in a closed cardboard or glass container for 1 year. Various parts of the plant contain organic acids, alkaloids, phenols and their derivatives, tannins, flavonoids, phenolic carboxylic acids, coumarins, catechins, triterpenoids, saponins and leucoanthocyanides, mineral salts, gum, resins.
Heather preparations are used as soothing, hypnotic, diuretic, expectorant, hemostatic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, astringent, wound healing and anti-acid agents.
It is used internally for inflammation of the bladder wall, purulent processes in the urinary tract, high temperature, diabetes, atherosclerosis, tuberculosis, dry cough with difficult-to-separate sputum, inflammation of the renal pelvis, diseases of the liver, biliary tract and spleen, gastritis with increased acidity, colitis, enterocolitis, sciatica, increased nervous excitability, insomnia, especially effective for kidney stones, externally with eczema, stomatitis, sore throat, allergic manifestations, for washing of wounds, ulcers, burns, in the form of poultices and baths for sciatica, rheumatism, gout, bruises and bone fractures.
