It is common in the European part. It grows along the banks of rivers, channels, and streams. In damp shady places, near roads, among shrubs, and on the edges of forests. It is widely used as livestock feed.

It is a perennial herbaceous plant of the legume family with a height of up to 1 m. The stem is powerful, woody, and hollow at the base, with unpaired compound leaves that support lancet stipules from below. Blooms from June to September.

 

The flowers are irregularly shaped, moth-like, collected in long cluster-like inflorescences located in the axils of the leaves throughout the stem. The flag of the flower is purple-blue, and the wings and boats are white.

 

The fruit is a multi-seeded standing bean with greenish-yellow seeds. The medicinal raw material is the aboveground part of the plant. The tops are harvested up to 20 cm long during flowering.

 

Dry under a canopy or in a well-ventilated attic. Raw materials are considered ready if the stems do not bend when bending, but break. Stored in a closed container for 1 year.

 

The aboveground part of Galega contains carbohydrates, alkaloids, tannins, flavonoids, vitamins, saponins, phenolic carboxylic acids and their derivatives, nitrogen-containing substances, fatty oil, and higher fatty acids.

 

The preparations of the plant have a diuretic, antibacterial, and anthelmintic effect, reduce the sugar content in the blood and also enhance the production of milk by the mammary gland. It is used for mild forms of diabetes, hypertension, and edema, to stimulate the separation of milk in nursing women.
