Badan thick-leaved is common in Siberia, Altai, and the Sayan Mountains. It grows on stony and gravelly placers along the banks of rivers and streams.


This is an extremely frost-resistant and shade-tolerant plant, has high biological adaptability and is well-bred in vegetable gardens and flower beds.


It is a perennial herbaceous plant of the saxifrage family. with a height of 0.5 m. The rhizome is thick, with numerous adnexal roots, and reaches a length of several meters.


Stem leafless, 6-20 cm high. The inflorescence is large, sprawling, and paniculate. Its branches end in curls. Leaves petiolate, rounded, large, glabrous, leathery, dark green, up to 30 cm in diameter, collected in a rosette.


On their bottom punctate glands are clearly visible on the side. Blooms in May – June. Flowers are five-membered, bell-shaped, purple-pink, with a green cup. Seeds ripen in August.


Medicinal raw materials are leaves and rhizomes. Leaves are collected in the summer-autumn period. Dry in the usual way. Rhizomes are harvested in autumn or early spring, cleaned of earth and small roots, washed, cut into pieces, dried in the sun and dried in a dryer.


The drying time for rhizomes is about 3 weeks, slow drying contributes preservation of tannins. Store in a closed container for 3 years. The plant contains polyphenols, tannins, ascorbic and gallic acids, flobafens, arbutin, isocoumarin, glucose, sucrose, starch, dextrin, oxalate calcium, resinous substances, phytoncides, essential oil, glycoside bergenine. The main biologically active substances are tannins of the mixed group and arbutin.


Plant preparations have anti-inflammatory, astringent, hemostatic, antiseptic, and bactericidal action strengthens the walls of blood vessels, and moderately reduce blood pressure.


Used internally for inflammatory diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. the intestinal tract, diarrhea, dysentery, heavy menstruation, bleeding after abortion, externally for douching with erosions of the cervix, colpitis, washings with wounds, as well as for rinses for chronic inflammation of the oral cavity.
