It is widespread everywhere. It grows among shrubs, along roads, and as a weed in fields and vegetable gardens.
It is a perennial herbaceous plant of the convolvulus family with a length of 1-1.5 m. The stems are numerous, thin, curly, twisted in a spiral, entwining neighboring plants. The taproot, branching, goes into the soil to a depth of 2 m.
The leaves are alternate, ovate-elliptical or oblong, located on petioles. The flowers are white or pink, on long peduncles, funnel-shaped, with 5 longitudinal dark stripes, with a weak but pleasant aroma, arranged 1-3 in the axils of the leaves.
Blooms from April to October. Medicinal raw materials are stems and roots, rarely flowers and seeds. They are harvested during flowering, most often during weeding. Dried under a canopy or in a dryer at a temperature of 45 ° C. The finished raw material has a characteristic bitter taste.
Shelf life is 1 year. All parts of the plant contain flavonoids, vitamins C and E, bitterness, as well as toxic alkaloids (for this reason, plant preparations are used with great caution).
Convolvulus preparations have a hypotensive, antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, hemostatic, local anesthetic, laxative, diuretic, wound healing, and irritating mucous membranes effect. It has long been used for hypertension, bronchial asthma, bronchitis, insomnia, colds, diseases of the liver, spleen, lungs, edema of various origins, and bleeding.
