Arnica is distributed mainly in the highland meadows of the Carpathians, upland meadows of the Baltic and in the Ukrainian Polissya. In culture propagated by seeds and cuttings of rhizomes

 

It is a perennial herbaceous plant of the Asteraceae family. 20-60 cm high. The rhizome is short, and brown, and penetrates into the soil to a depth of no more than 3 cm. The stem is erect, tall 25-70 cm, with stem and rosette leaves.

 

Stem leaves opposite, oblong, or lanceolate. basal leaves oval, dark green, form a rosette. stem and side shoot ends in orange-yellow baskets. Each plant carries from 1 to 5 baskets.

 

Blooms in June – July. Medicinal^! raw materials are inflorescences, sometimes grass and roots. Flower baskets are harvested during the period of full bloom in dry sunny weather when the dew dries.

 

They are cut off with scissors or torn off at the very base so that the remainder of the peduncle was no more than 1 cm. Dry in the open air in the shade for 7-10 days, in a well-ventilated area or in a dryer at temperatures of 55-60 °C.

 

During drying, do not turn the raw materials recommended as baskets crumble. Store raw materials for 2 years.

 

In the inflorescences of arnica, arnicin, an essential oil, tannins, ascorbic acid, carotenoids, cynarine, choline, betaine, alkaloids, phytosterols, fatty oil, sugars, organic acids, gum, inulin. The rhizome contains essential oil, resins, wax, gum, and bitter substance. Arnica drugs lower blood pressure, enhance bile secretion and lowers blood cholesterol.

 

Applied inside with heart weakness, atherosclerosis, hypertension, angina pectoris, or internal bleeding, as a choleretic remedy. Externally used as lotions for bruises, abrasions, bruises, small wounds, boils, trophic ulcers, burns, and frostbite.
